Girl with a Pearl Earring
Johannes Vermeer
1665
Dutch Golden Age, Baroque

A girl. With eyes full of life. Ironically no eyebrows. A blue and beige turban. Oversized dress. And a pearl earring. Lips plump and apart. Her eyes are deceiving. But her lips aren't attempting anything. No seduction. Just presence. She would've had an honorable character. Respectable virtues. Her eyes say that. There are claims that 'the girl' is sibyl or biblical, some say it was his daughter, or his accomplice's daughter. Whoever it was, she lived a life that made Vermeer want to be known for ages. And this painting has lived through war and bombs, virus and no one to see her, and finally time. She lived through time.
I believe she was from a humble background. And the artist thought she needed and deserved something extraordinary. And that extraordinary element is the 'pearl earring'. An earring competing the lustre in her eyes, whilst also being calm, aware and simple.
She is content, but is also curious. Her eyes search. They aren't worn out. She sleeps well, like never betrayed and been betrayed. She is surrounded by good people. Yet she looks like she is fill and fit with herself. She is not lonely. But she also has only herself.
Vermeer didn't paint who she was. He painted who any girl deserved to be.
